Gum Disease Therapy

Commonly called gum disease, periodontal disease is an infection of the gums, and it has been linked to increased risk for heart attacks, strokes, low-weight births, and diabetes complications. Gum disease is also the main cause of tooth loss for adults in the United States. The condition is caused by irritation from hardened plaque (tartar) buildup below the gum line, and bacteria actually cause the infection.

Periodontal disease may begin as gingivitis, then progresses into periodontitis. It can cause deterioration of gums, teeth, and the jawbone. Left alone, gum disease will not go away. It requires professional intervention.

The therapy we recommend will depend upon the state of your condition. Scaling and root planing, known as a "deep cleaning" may be sufficient. However, advanced cases may require laser periodontal surgery. Dr. Ryan is trained and certified to use Periolase™, a breakthrough technology for laser gum disease therapy. In addition to removing bacteria and tartar, Periolase can also remove diseased gum tissue. No stitches are required because the Periolase seals gum tissue as it moves along. Laser gum therapy is precise, comfortable, and convenient. Learn more about Periolase here.
